National media discovers "Bainport" - and how Gov. Romney is making money by moving jobs to China during the campaign

The national media is discovering Bainport (Sensata in Freeport, Illinois). Bainport is a protest camp set up by Sensata workers whose jobs are being shipped to China by Bain Capital during the current presedential campaign. There is a good roundup of the national media attention on DailyKos. As mentioned previously, Mitt Romney is a large shareholder of Sensata and is profiting right now during the campaign by shipping these jobs to China.

Remember - Schilling supports:

• Free Trade deals that ship jobs overseas
• Tax break incentives for companies to leave the U.S.
• Hiding the number of jobs companies send overseas
• Cutting job retraining programs for workers whose jobs were lost overseas

Rep. Schilling, you said, "Americans Need Jobs Now" in the Argus Dispatch on September 23.1 Will you stand up for the jobs at Sensata Technologies in your district and tell Bain Capital that you do not support outsourcing those jobs to China? We demand an answer.

Il 17 - Bobby Schilling a disappointment – time for a change

If there is one word that describes Bobby Schilling it would be “disappointment”. He was supposed to go to Washington and stop wasteful spending. Instead of cutting spending he helped scuttle the $4 trillion deficit reduction deal worked out by Speaker Boehner – making him part of the deficit problem, not the solution. He also brags about his support for forcing the government to pay full list price for prescription drugs in Medicare Part D, a rule that wastes $60 billion dollars according to the Congressional Budget Office. Oddly enough, his free spending habits put him to the left of his Democratic challenger. He talks a lot about jobs but has failed to deliver when he has had the chance. The Thompson prison sits empty, and 1,100 badly needed jobs go unfilled,(Update - Thompson prison has been sold to the feds - no thanks to Schilling) because its sale to the Federal Bureau of Prisons has been stopped by House Republicans. Schilling was “against it before he was for it” of course. Why should his colleagues care about jobs for Illinois when the local congressman wasn’t that interested - until his reelection campaign. And don’t get me started on his vote to cut VA healthcare benefits for our veterans.

New poll shows Obama (and Democratic proposals) leading Romney among small business owners

One of the themes that Bobby Schilling hits the hardest on the campaign trail is his support for small businesses - with the inference being that business owners prefere Republican policies to those of the Democrats. A new poll shows us that this is simply not true.

From the story: "Nearly half of small business owners (47 percent) plan to vote for a second term for the president, compared to 39 percent who plan to vote for Mitt Romney, according to a new poll conducted by the George Washington University School of Political Management and Thumbtack.com. Even more importantly, perhaps, the president is perceived as more supportive of small companies by the most coveted group of voters — independents."

Bobby Schilling not able to deliver on sale of Thompson Prison (or the 1,100 jobs)

Bobby Schilling is suddenly all for the sale of the Thompson Prison to the federal government – this is a relatively new position for him as he was “against it before he was for it”. In between he sat on his hands a lot. About a year ago the federal Bureau of Prisons negotiated to buy the empty Thompson Prison from the state of Illinois for $165 millions dollars. At that time Congressman Schilling was AWOL from the discussion.

Since his challenger, Cheri Bustos has made his impotence on the sale a campaign issue, and since several editorial boards including the Peoria Journal Star and Chicago Tribune (TWICE!) have raked him and other Republicans over the coals for sitting on their hands while the prison sits empty, 1,100 jobs are lost, and the state loses out on badly needed revenue, Schilling has since changed his position and now wants the sale to go forward. (Just like Amtrak, Schilling has many, many different positions so it is hard to keep track.) The problem is, he can’t get the job done. He did propose to reduce the sale price from a more or less fair $165 million to the “screw you Illinois taxpayers” price of $75 million. However, even the State of Illinois wouldn’t stoop that low – and that’s saying something. The problem for Schilling is that his fellow Republicans, most notably Rep. Frank Wolf of Virginia, won’t accommodate him on the sale. Since Rep. Wolf heads a sub-committee that has veto power of the sale it’s not going to happen unless Bobby Schilling can step up to the plate. But what the heck, it’s only 1,100 jobs.

UPDATE: The Obama administration has made an end run around Congressional Republicans who were blocking the sale and is directing the Dept. of Justice to go ahead with the purchase of the Thompson prison at the negotiated $165 million price and not the lower price that Congressman Schilling had asked for. Governor Quinn indicated that the $165 million will go to pay overdue state bills, giving a boost to many small business owners who are owed money by the state. Sen. Dick Durbin was quoted in the Quad City Times on the sale saying, "I asked the congressman [Schilling] to do one thing -- to get Rep. Wolf to sign the letter -- but he couldn't do it," Sen. Durbin said. "He couldn't get it done."
